What a series – #LoveWomensBasketball

The Korisliiga on the women’s side ended this week just gone, and what an ending it was to it!!

First of all, the Korisliiga on the women’s side was really exciting this season, with results pretty much going this way and that. Not many weeks went past without a surprise, and playoffs were no exception – well, then again during a season like this – what really classifies as a surprise, that was hard to say!

But PeKa vs Topo – that was the final pairing we were give, best of five series (honestly, this series could have been best of 11 and we would have loved it all the same). Each of the three games was a pretty much an instant classic.

First game in Kotka, OK – PeKa won it by few baskets in the end, but it was close all the way through and you really couldn’t tell the teams apart.

Second game, looked to be going one way, turned the other way and after two O.T’s .. PeKa came away with the second W of the series and having a chance to clinch their fifth title in a row at home.

What a fifth game, nothing in it for most of the game – PeKa playing with six players, then they lose their captain for (possible) tear in a calf or something.. so for the last 15 minutes or so – they played with the same five players on the court. This sort of showed at the start of the 15min spell, as PeKa raced to a double digit lead, but when the legs started to the heavy in the last minutes, ToPo clawed the gap point by point.. and with only a couple of seconds to go… Ebba Pekonen hits a buzzer beating three pointer to tie the game.

Then you were pretty sure the game was heading for O.T ( AGAIN !! ) and most likely for a ToPo win, and at the same a decent chance to take the series in the end.. with the injury to PeKa captain possibly keeping her sidelined for a short while.

Also about the Pekonen three pointer, to say that the reaction from the player was under-rated.. would be an understatement on its own – looking through the photos, Ebba sort of brushes hair off the face while her team mates are going mental!! But – that is Ebba for you – great player, not given to too much celebrations on the court 🙂

But – the game still have one more twist, PeKa take the ball, run the court.. ToPo fouls (online there have been opinions this way and that about whether it was a foul or not… and referees called it, so a foul it is!).

Free throws to PeKa – Cosby makes them both and it’s celebration time in Kotka!

The Men’s Finals are still to come – but they really have a lot to live up to, to even make it close to a series like PeKa vs Topo was. Superb series to end the season – with a series that will definitely be talked about in the years to come!
